Vice President of Student Life
Bakari Camara Caldwell
Hi friends! My name is Bakari Camara Caldwell! My friends call me Bakey Cauldron, Bacardi Colorado, Bakery Croissant–feel free to have at any of those titles. I hail from the village of Oswego in the land of Lincoln [Illinois]. I’m a double major in Secondary Education and English and am excited to serve as your Vice President of Student Life for this academic year.
Engaging the Student Senate has been something that I’ve been dedicated to since my sophomore year. I was known for attending the Student Senate meetings weekly as just an interested student and decided to run for Senator At-Large for my junior year, then serving as the Community Outreach Senator. As the Vice President of Student Life it is my duty to listen to, plan, assist, and support events and initiatives that bring student priorities to the forefront. Partnering with University offices, administrators, community organizations, student organizations and individual folks in order to achieve a collective “Drake story” is important to me.
Outside of the Senate, I am a server at Bubba Southern Comforts in downtown and I nanny for a family in the Des Moines area. In the past, I have worked for Starbucks and Firebirds Wood Fired Grill, both in West Des Moines. I’ve served on the Executive Board for the Coalition of Black Students, and been an intern for the Herb & Karen Baum Symposium at Drake. Lastly, I have also been a Resident Assistant on campus in both Goodwin-Kirk and Herriott.
Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions, comments, concerns, or inquiries. I am always hear to listen to each and every student’s voice on this campus. I’ll leave you with a quote from Audre Lorde: “Tomorrow belongs to those of us who conceive of it as belonging to everyone; who lend the best of ourselves to it, and with joy.”
